Not even coronavirus can cancel Pride Month as a new virtual event is going ahead this week to celebrate and support the LGBTQ+ community.
Aptly named Can’t Cancel Pride, the campaign will help raise visibility and funds for LGBTQ+ communities most heavily impacted by COVID-19.
Big names are throwing their support behind the relief benefit, hosted by Procter & Gamble and iHeartMedia, including Adam Lambert, Katy Perry, Sia, and Ricky Martin.
Every year, during June, the LGBTQ+ community celebrates with events across the globe recognising the influence their advocates have had around the world.
The awareness month is in tribute to the Stonewall Riots, which took place in June 1969. The riots followed a raid that took place at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, prompting the LGBTQ+ community to hold a series of demonstrations to protest against the raid and calling for the establishment of places that gays and lesbians could go and be open about their sexual orientation.
The riots served as a catalyst for the rights of LGBTQ+ people, and within six months, two gay activist groups had formed in New York. Over the years since the event, many gay rights organisations have been formed – not just in the US, but around the world.
Chatting about the event, P&G’s Chief Brand Officer, Marc Pritchard, said: “The pandemic has exposed the complex and significant obstacles facing the LGBTQ+ community.
“We must continue to fight hate and intolerance against all people while redoubling our efforts to elevate LGBTQ+ visibility and providing support for those in need.
“Can’t Cancel Pride is about showing the community that they are not alone and that they are seen and loved, as the pandemic has led to the closure of closed community centers and support systems that millions of LGBTQ+ people rely on every day.”
Meanwhile, Chief Marketing Officer for iHeartMedia, Gayle Troberman, said: “There’s no question COVID-19 has impacted the LGBTQ+ community in a variety of ways, and at this time, the struggle for equality and inclusion has never been more important.
“Now is a time we need to come together to support the organisations that help bring critical resources to LGBTQ+ people in need and Can’t Cancel Pride aims to do just that.
“Like always, Pride will continue to represent the resilience, beauty and strength of the LGBTQ+ community around the nation and the globe.”
The June 25 event will stream on iHeartRadio Facebook and Instagram pages, and broadcast on iHeartMedia stations nationwide, as well as the app.
Fans around the world will then be encouraged to share their special Pride moments on social media using the hashtag #CantCancelPride throughout the month of June.
All money raised will go to LGBTQ+ organisations, including GLAAD, SAGE, The Trevor Project, National Black Justice Coalition, CenterLink and OutRight Action International.
