Live music is back! Brixton Academy opens its (virtual) doors – and you can even stand onstage with the band

New 360° virtual reality experience will breathe life back into gig scene.

While beauty salons and gyms are reopening their doors, music lovers are still itching for the day the lights go down in a dark venue as their favourite band walks onstage.

Now, that day has come.

The only catch, it’s going to be in your living room instead.

Thanks to London’s legendary O2 Academy Brixton, a series of live shows – available to experience in 360° virtual reality – will breathe life back into the gig scene.

The programme will include bespoke performances, by creating a purpose-built studio to film exclusive performances using cutting-edge virtual reality technology.

While acts are yet to be announced, the team who organised Wireless Connect – the virtual fest held in place of the cancelled Wireless – are taking care of the Brixton line-up.

For Wireless Connect, they managed to secure the likes of MOBO-winner Stefflon Don, grime king Big Narstie, and rising star Iann Dior.

The remarkable tech, in association with Live Nation UK and MelodyVR, will allow you to choose where you ‘stand’ to watch the gigs, including onstage with the artists.

So, if you have ever dreamt of being side-of-stage with the VIPs, then this might actually be a better option than being squished in the mosh-pit.

It is not yet known when venues will open their doors in the non-virtual sense.

Despite the hospitality and beauty sectors now resuming business, the music industry is lagging behind as they are deemed to be too high-risk in spreading COVID-19.

They have, however, been given a lifeline after the success of the #LetTheMusicPlay campaign which called on the government to help struggling venues from collapse.

Boris Johnson and co. have now pledged to invest £1.57billion to protect Britain’s cultural, arts and heritage institutions while they remain closed as the globe recovers from the pandemic and scientists race towards finding a vaccine.
