With 24/7 rolling news, school closures, and global lockdowns, it’s impossible for our little ones not to notice that something strange is going on with the world right now.
And thanks to a power trio, a new storybook helps kids understand what is happening.
Say hello to schoolgirl Kaitlyn Powell, 10, and art student Chay Winter, 19. The pair, who both hail from Bedfordshire, have teamed up with author Susie Cullen to create an enchanting tale about a character called Covi, The Little Green Dinosaur.
The story, which tells the tale of a girl called Emily who finds comfort in a friendly dinosaur, is based on a real event whereby a local resident dressed as a dinosaur and roamed the streets of Bedfordshire to entertain children in lockdown.
Chatting exclusively to Uspire, author Susie said the headlines have made the virus sound so scary to younger generations that they wanted to rewrite the narrative.
Susie explained: “The word ‘Covid’ has such negative connotations for little ones, it is a word they keep hearing that conjures up images of scary things outside their home.
“My idea was to bring a little friendly dinosaur with a similar name literally into their bedrooms in the form of a bedtime storybook.”
She added: “I wrote the poem and asked my Facebook friends to help me illustrate it.
“I’ve been overwhelmed by the response and was enchanted by the designs that both Chay and Kaitlyn put forward.”
Susie concluded: “Other local children have also submitted their Covi drawings and these are included in the book, in the form of a collage, making it a real community effort.”
The book, which was created in just four weeks from conception to release, is now available for presale order on Amazon.
Art student Chay added: “We hope that we can sell as many books as possible in order to help little children across the world and also raise vital funds for our keyworkers.”
The team are already working on a second book featuring Covi as they continue on their mission to raise cash for NHS Charities Together from sales.
This second edition in the series, entitled Covi’s Big Day out, follows the dinosaur as he tries out different frontline professions – including driving a London bus to see the Queen and take his magical friends on a trip to the seaside.
We know it might be for kids, but we wouldn’t mind a copy ourselves!
