Some people may think it sounds dramatic to say a band changed my life, but I’m gonna say it anyway.
Music has been a massive part of my life ever since I can remember, and one band that I listen to every single day are Best Coast.
Formed in Los Angeles back in 2009 and consisting of Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno, Best Coast’s music is like sunshine shooting straight out of my speaker.
I first heard Best Coast when I was working in H&M as a sales assistant. I had a habit of calling the office out back every time I heard a song I liked so that I could find out who the track was by. This particular day was Best Coast’s Boyfriend – the lyrics, the sounds, Bethany’s voice – everything just spoke to me.
I immediately ordered the album ‘Crazy For You’ and the rest is history. I used to drive around my hometown in my battered VW Polo blasting that album out, daydreaming about the day I’d be doing the same thing but in sunny Los Angeles.
Fast forward almost a decade and I was doing just that, and boy did it feel good.
But there’s some wonderful Best Coast memories that I’ve experienced in between – the most special being the time I got to interview Bethany face-to-face at a random bar in Shoreditch.
I was working for a national newspaper and loved doing music features in my own time, so I reached out to the band’s rep and they made it happen.
Despite it being 2012 and camera phones very much existing, I opted against asking for a selfie and instead I asked Bethany to sign my copy of Crazy For You. It’s probably one of my most cherished possessions to be honest (along with my Best Coast necklace!)
Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to see Best Coast a handful of times in London – and on one occasion, I even saw Bobb in Wetherspoon’s in Brixton whilst having a pre-gig pint! And despite looking like an ABSOLUTE GEEK in my Best Coast tee, I approached him and asked for a pic anyway!
But why have BC changed my life? Well, I find solace in music. Music has always been there for me, through the good times, the bad times, the fun times, and the bloody awful times.
I know it sounds cringe-worthy to say, but sometimes I feel like Best Coast songs have been written just for me. The words that Bethany sings sometimes feel like they could have come straight out of my personal diary – and I can relate to them SO much.
Despite being a Brit, I too share her love for California, and I too have been absolutely crazy about a couple of guys in my time. I can’t actually remember how many times I listened to ‘Feeling OK’ after a particular break up! I’ll never forget the first time I saw Bethany play the opening guitar to that song live, even now I sometimes watch the video I recorded on a loop!
Ten years since ‘Crazy For You’ was released and BC are still making music that gives me goosebumps. Their latest album, ‘Always Tomorrrow’, is another all-tracker for me and again relates to how I’m feeling about certain situations in my life right now.
I was supposed to be seeing Best Coast in Camden in May this year, but obviously 2020 had other plans. However, I was lucky enough to purchase a ticket for their virtual ‘Crazy For You’ 10th anniversary gig this month – and it was an absolute joy to listen to Bethany and Bobb talk about one of my all time favourite albums.
Crazy For You is etched on my right arm forever, along with the diamond that Bethany has tattooed on her middle finger – can you tell I’m obsessed yet?! Obsessed in the best possible way!
I hope Best Coast never stop making music, and speaking to me in a way that a band has never done before – I only wish they had been around when I was a teen!
But until we meet again in London town, I’ll keep blasting them out every single day and tell anyone (and everyone!) who will listen to me about my “favourite band Best Coast”.
