Heal yourself happy: Three DIY remedies you need to know

Save pennies on your road to better health

If you’ve ever bought something and realised you’re paying more for packaging than for product, then you may’ve thought, ‘Next time, I’ll make it myself’.

Well, now that ‘next time’ has arrived as we’re bringing you recipes to make at home.

The holy trinity of healing remedies are courtesy of our friends over at Nexus, who pride themselves on questioning the mainstream narrative to guide independent thinkers.

They have kindly revealed the ingredients to their favourite herbal treatments for a punch of plant power to tackle any ailments that might leave you feeling under the weather.

First up, is the superhero of targeting sore throats, sage.

As soon as you start to feel that niggle in the throat where it feels like you’re swallowing glass, this remedy is the perfect antidote for it.

Hailed for its antioxidant-rich properties, sage is a natural anti-inflammatory herb that can soothe both congestion and runny symptoms like the lovely sounding post-nasal drainage.

Here’s how you can make your own sage tincture at home:


•1 small glass jar

•Sage (dried or fresh)

•90-proof alcohol (usually vodka, rum or brandy)


•Pack the jar with sage

•Fill the jar with alcohol all the way to the top

•Seal with an air-tight lid


•Place in a cool dark place for at least a month

•Shake every other day

•After a month, strain and pour liquid into a spray bottle

•Use the tincture as needed for sore throats and congestion

Secondly, we have the trusty garlic, although it needs to be pickled for best practice.

So powerful it can even deter vampires, garlic’s antiviral and antibacterial qualities can significantly reduce your risk of getting sick and cut your recovery time in half if you do.

As an added bonus, the pickling helps to feed your healthy gut bacteria.

To whip up your garlic band-aid at home, here’s what you have to do:


•1 pint jar

•Apple cider vinegar

•5 to 6 bulbs of garlic, broken into cloves and peeled

•1 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

•1 tsp dill (optional)

•One heat-proof sealable glass jar


•In the pint jar, place the garlic cloves (and other ingredients if you chose to use them)

•Pour the apple cider vinegar over the garlic until the cloves are covered

•Fasten the lid and leave the jar in a dark place at room temperature for two weeks

•After a fortnight, transfer to your refrigerator or a cool cellar

•Try to wait a further two or three weeks before eating

Lastly, we have the beloved aloe vera plant, so majestic you don’t even need a recipe for it.

While medics may call it ‘alternative health’, it is actually believed to have been used since 16th century BC, predating it to what we now consider as traditional medicine.

It has an array of healing properties and therefore can be used for a variety of conditions such as improving digestive health, clearing acne, bettering oral health, and soothing burns.

All you need to do for this one is to buy the plant.

The reason for its abilities is the long, thick leaves that are filled with a gel packed with vitamins, minerals and healing enzymes that can help us mere mortals.

You can either cut off the leaves then trim away the green skin to access the gel, which you can rub anywhere that is hurting, or you can even ingest it.

The juice from the leaves supports your digestive system by regulating the number of bacteria in your gut and can reduce inflamed gastrointestinal tissue.

Just be mindful, some parts near the rind are strong so avoid taking in high doses.

When you consider all of these products sell on the shelves with 00s on the end of their price tag, you’ll be saving yourself plenty of pennies as well as trips to the shop by making them.
